SEATTLE, WA — A 22-year-old man suffered serious injuries Sunday morning when he was struck by a vehicle while riding a scooter in Seattle’s Uptown neighborhood, reports KOMO News.

The incident unfolded at the corner of Mercer Street and Queen Anne Avenue North, prompting a multi-agency emergency response at around 2:00 a.m.

Seattle Police Department officials said a 26-year-old man was behind the wheel of a vehicle heading eastbound on Mercer Street when he merged into a different lane and hit the victim, who was riding a scooter.

Responding fire crews administered aid to the rider before transporting him to Harborview Medical Center. Authorities said the patient was listed in serious condition after medics worked to stabilize injuries sustained on both legs.

The driver, who kept traveling eastbound from the scene of the crash, was stopped by officers at the corner of 3rd Avenue North and Mercer Street. Following an evaluation by a Seattle Police Department Drug Recognition Expert, he was believed to be under the influence. The suspect was subsequently taken into custody and booked into King County Jail for an investigation into hit and run and vehicular assault.
