THURSTON COUNTY, WA — A driver was arrested early Thursday after fleeing an injury crash involving a Thurston County patrol vehicle in Rochester, according to KOMO News.
The incident occurred near 178th Avenue Southwest and Jordan Street Southwest, some time before 2:00 a.m., when Thurston County deputies were alerted to a stolen Hyundai being tracked in the area.
Officials say deputies had responded to the scene after the stolen vehicle was seen stopped at the intersection. One deputy had positioned his patrol vehicle with emergency lights activated to prevent the Hyundai from leaving, but the driver reversed, turned their wheels toward the patrol vehicle, and backed up a a high speed, striking the patrol vehicle.
As the deputy began getting back into his cruiser for protection, the suspect used the stolen vehicle to hit the cruiser’s driver’s side, pushing the deputy further inside.
A pursuit ensued but was later terminated on Interstate 5 near Scatter Creed Rest Area. The driver was then taken into custody and transported to Thurston County Jail.
First responders transported the deputy to St. Peter’s Emergency Room for minor injuries.
