KING COUNTY, WA — A 17-year-old girl and a 28-year-old man died early last Friday following a head-on crash in Kent, reports KOMO News.
The fatal collision occurred in the 15600 block of Southeast 272nd Street at around 12:06 a.m.
According to the King County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were responding to reports of a 28-year-old Algona man who appeared to be passed out in a 2006 Nissan Altima at a Fred Meyer in Covington. Deputies quickly learned that the vehicle had been reported stolen, but before they could speak to the male driver, he woke up and sped away.
Officials said the fleeing vehicle traveled over a median and a planter box before it fled the parking lot and began going westbound in the eastbound lanes. To remain in compliance with the state’s pursuit laws, the deputies reportedly refrained from following the man.
Some time later, Kent Police, Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority fire crews and paramedics responded to the scene on SE 272nd Street, where the Nissan Altima and a 2005 Chrysler Town Car van were found blocking the roadway.
A 17-year-old girl who was a passenger in the Chrysler suffered fatal injuries, as did the 28-year-old fleeing driver. Both were pronounced deceased at the scene.
First responders rushed the driver of the Chrysler, a 38-year-old woman, to an area hospital for serious injuries. No updates on her condition have been released, and officials have not yet said whether she is related to the teen.
An investigation by the Kent Police Traffic Unit remains ongoing.
