PIERCE COUNTY, WA — Emergency crews were called to a crash that caused a multi-lane closure of Interstate 5 Wednesday afternoon in Fife, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
The wreck occurred on the southbound side of Interstate 5 near 54th Avenue. It was first recorded by WSDOT at 1:33 p.m.
Local officials have not disclosed specific details, but the two left lanes and the HOV lane were shut down in the immediate aftermath, leading to a traffic backup that stretched five miles long.
Motorists were asked to move over as first responders worked the scene. Those heading south towards Tacoma were warned of significant delays impacting the area.
