PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A 27-year-old man was seriously injured early Sunday when he was struck by a vehicle while riding a skateboard in south Tacoma, reports KIRO 7 Seattle.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department said the incident took place in the 15700 block of Waller Road at around 2:43 a.m.
A preliminary investigation shows the man was using a skateboard to travel north on the road when he was hit from the back by a northbound vehicle. Authorities said the driver then fled the scene without stopping.
First responders rushed the victim to an area hospital, where he was placed on life support.
An investigation remains ongoing, but vehicle parts left at the scene have helped officials determine that the striking car is a Ford sedan, which should have damage to its front driver’s side.
Residents in the area are urged to check their surveillance cameras for footage of vehicles between 2:30 a.m. and 3:00 a.m.
