THURSTON COUNTY, WA — A DUI suspect was flown to a hospital early Sunday after a wrong-way crash with a semi-truck on Interstate 5 near Tumwater, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The collision occurred on the southbound side of I-5 at milepost 104.02, past the U.S. Highway 101 offramp. It was first recorded by the Washington State Department of Transportation shortly before 3:44 a.m.

The events leading up to the wreck were not immediately shared, but WSP troopers said a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction collided head-on with a semi-truck.

First responders rushed the wrong-way driver by airlift to an area hospital with serious injuries. WSP officials confirmed the injured driver was also placed under custody for suspected DUI.

It was unclear whether the semi-truck driver was injured.

Three left lanes of I-5 were initially closed, followed by a full southbound closure by 4:35 a.m. Motorists were instructed to seek alternate routes.

By 8:14 a.m., more than four hours after the initial report, the scene had been cleared and all travel lanes were reopened to traffic.
