SEATTLE, WA — A 39-year-old Bellevue Police Department motorcycle officer is in critical condition after suffering a 50 to 60 feet fall from an Interstate 5 onramp Tuesday in Seattle, according to the department blog.

The incident occurred on the I-5 southbound entrance ramp from Michigan Street, at about 1:54 p.m.

Preliminary details indicate Officer Kevin Bereta was riding a department motorcycle as part of Vice President Kamala Harris’s security motorcade during her recent Seattle visit. As a result of an unspecified incident, Bellevue Police said the officer was ejected off his bike, fell off the ramp and onto the southbound lanes of I-5 below.

Authorities said the officer, who sustained several serious injuries, was rushed to Harborview Medical Center’s intensive care unit, where he remains in critical condition.

An investigation by the Washington State Patrol remains ongoing.
