SEATTLE, WA — A 16-year-old boy died Tuesday morning after a single-vehicle crash near the West Seattle Bridge that left a suspected intoxicated driver injured, reports the Seattle Police Department.

The collision occurred near the intersection of Southwest Spokane Street and 26th Avenue Southwest. SPD officers were dispatched to the area at around 7:30 a.m.

According to a preliminary investigation, a 20-year-old man was driving eastbound on Southwest Spokane Street at a high rate of speed. At one point, he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to strike a cement pillar. Authorities said the impact of the crash sent debris airborne, causing the glass of a nearby bus stop to shatter.

The teenage passenger, who had to be extricated from the wreckage by Seattle Fire Department crews, was rushed to Harborview Medical Center along with the driver, who was less seriously injured. Officials confirmed the teenager later died from his injuries.

SPD officials said the driver, who displayed signs of intoxication at the scene, was placed under custody for vehicular homicide. He is expected to be booked into King County Jail upon medical clearance.

The department’s Traffic Collision Investigation Squad continues to investigate.
