PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A 48-year-old woman from Tacoma died early Wednesday due to a motorcycle crash involving a hit-and-run driver in Fife, reports KOMO News.
The fatal incident occurred on the northbound side of I-5 near Exit 137 to 54th Avenue East.
According to Washington State Patrol Trooper John Dattilo, a 20-year-old man was driving a white BMW at a high rate of speed when the car struck the motorcycle.
The female rider died as a result of injuries suffered in the crash, confirmed the WSP.
Authorities say it appears that after the BMW overturned on the left side of northbound I-5, the male driver exited the wreckage and got a ride from a friend who was in the area.
Morning commuters faced heavy delays as crews worked to clear the scene.
An investigation and search for the hit-and-run driver was underway, but WSP troopers said they believe they had identified the suspect.
