PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A DUI suspect was arrested early Friday after a police pursuit led to a fiery crash on Interstate 5 in south Tacoma, according to KIRO 7 News.
The collision occurred on a span of I-5 from the 72nd Street offramp, in the city’s South End area. It was first reported shortly after 12:00 a.m.
Pierce County Sheriff’s Department officials said the events first unfolded when a deputy spotted a car traveling erratically on the road. As the deputy turned on their emergency equipment and approached the vehicle, its driver fled at a high rate of speed, prompting a chase.
At one point during the pursuit, the fleeing vehicle lost a rear tire on the northbound highway. As the driver reduced speed, the deputy deployed a PIT maneuver, causing the car to rotate. The car ran over an embankment before re-entering the interstate. Moments later, authorities attempted a second PIT maneuver, which caused the vehicle to come to rest.
Responding officers were able to remove both the driver and passenger from the car before it caught fire.
The driver, who was arrested following the incident, faces charges for DUI and eluding. No injuries were immediately reported.
