THURSTON COUNTY, WA — One person died early Thursday after a single-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 101 near northwest Olympia, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The wreck took place on the northbound highway at milepost 357, just south of Kennedy Creek Natural Area Preserve, near the Mason/Thurston County Line. It was first reported by WSDOT at 12:46 a.m.

Though it remains unclear what led up to the crash, the Washington State Patrol said a vehicle traveled off the roadway and into a ditch.

The driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased, confirmed officials.

WSDOT crews were called to the scene to assist the WSP with traffic control as troopers conducted an investigation.

The right northbound lane was closed for over 2.5 hours during the response. By 3:21 p.m., the scene had been cleared from the roadway and all lanes were reopened to traffic.
