TACOMA, WA — A trooper and a civilian employee with the Washington State Patrol were injured early Thursday due to a crash in Tacoma involving a stolen police car, reports KIRO 7 Seattle.
Fife Police said its officers responded to the 8500 block of Fourth Street at about midnight after receiving a call about a home invasion.
Officers arrived to find three suspects running out and speeding off in a car, which then traveled into a ditch. The three suspects fled on foot with police in pursuit. Two of the suspects were apprehended and a firearm was recovered. The third suspect was able to get into a Fife police car and speed off.
By 12:30 a.m., troopers had begun searching for the stolen police vehicle. One trooper was traveling north on Portland Avenue in Tacoma when their SUV was hit by the suspect in the stolen police car, who had emerged from an alley along Wright Avenue.
Officials said a WSP civilian employee who was a passenger in the struck WSP car suffered a broken bone. The trooper sustained more minor injuries.
The suspect, who was suspected of impairment, was taken into custody. They face a number of charges, including vehicular assault.
