YAKIMA COUNTY, WA — Two children, ages 6 and 8, died Tuesday, February 28, after a wrong-way collision on Interstate 82 near west Sunnyside, according to KIMA TV.
The fatal wreck occurred on the eastbound lanes at milepost 65, south of Gap Road, at about 7:30 p.m.
An early investigation by the Washington State Patrol indicates a 20-year-old man was driving west on the eastbound side. At one point, his vehicle collided with a car driven by a Grandview man.
Officials said a 6-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl in the victim vehicle died from their injuries at the scene. The victim driver and a third child were transported to a local hospital with undisclosed injuries.
The wrong-way driver also sustained injuries and was taken to a Seattle hospital. He was suspected of being under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the crash and faces a number of charges.
