WHATCOM COUNTY, WA — A vehicle crash late Friday afternoon caused a three-mile backup on Interstate 5 in Bellingham, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The collision took place on the northbound lanes just south of Exit 254 to Iowa Street, in the city’s Roosevelt neighborhood. It was first reported by WSDOT at 4:54 p.m.

Details remain limited at this time, but the left lane was closed as a result, and shortly after 5:00 p.m., the miles-long backup had already formed in the area. Long delays were anticipated as Washington State Patrol troopers and local fire crews responded to the scene.

By 5:53 p.m., nearly an hour after the initial report, crews had cleared the scene and all lanes were reopened. However, evening commuters were warned of lingering delays.

No injuries have been reported at this time.
