SEATTLE, WA — One person was hospitalized early Thursday after a crash involving a DUI suspect in downtown Seattle, according to KOMO News.

The collision occurred at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Pike Street, in front of The North Face store, shortly after 12:30 a.m.

Seattle Police said a patrol officer had begun following a wrong-way driver in a BMW. At one point, the officer turned on his emergency equipment and attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle when he suspected the driver may be impaired. Instead of pulling over, the driver sped away, and the officer made a decision not to pursue.

Shortly after, the BMW ran a red light at the 5th Avenue and Pike Street intersection and collided with a Hyundai.

At this point, the patrol officer was able to stop the DUI suspect before he was able to flee on foot. It was unclear whether he was injured, but he was subsequently arrested and booked into King County Jail.

A passenger in the BMW, who fell to the ground upon exiting the car, was evaluated by Seattle Fire crews at the scene but turned down further treatment.

The driver of the Hyundai was transported to Harborview Medical Center with injuries considered non-life-threatening.
