News: DUI suspect arrested after car hits pole off of SR-162 in Orting

PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A driver was taken into custody for suspected intoxication early Monday after a crash on State Route 162 in Orting, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The collision occurred at the intersection with South Prairie Creek Road East. It was first reported by Trooper Robert Reyer at 3:29 a.m.

Authorities have not released the sequence of events leading up to the wreck, but the suspect’s vehicle struck a utility pole, downing power lines in the area. As a result, a section of SR-162 was shut down in both directions as crews tended to the scene.


Multiple local agencies, including the Washington State Department of Transportation – Tacoma, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, Orting Police, and Buckley Police, al responded to the site.


Shortly before 4:00 a.m., the roadway was reopened to normal traffic.
