KITSAP COUNTY, WA — A 60-year-old woman died Saturday afternoon following a two-vehicle wreck near Kitsap Mall in Silverdale, according to Kitsap Sun.
A deputy with the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office first responded to the scene at Silverdale Way and Kitsap Place shortly after 2:15 p.m.
A preliminary investigation indicates the woman was driving a Mazda Miata southbound at a high rate of speed when she failed to brake or stop for traffic at the intersection’s red light. Moments later, the Miata slammed into the back of a Chevy Traverse.
Despite life-saving measures applied within three minutes of the crash, the driver of the Miata, a Belfair resident, died from her injuries at the scene.
The driver of the Traverse and her two juvenile passengers were evaluated by Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue medics and then released from the scene.
A section of Silverdale Way was blocked off for more than two hours during the response and investigation.
An investigation remains ongoing, but drugs and alcohol are not suspected factors in the wreck. Results from an autopsy conducted Monday by a Kitsap County forensic pathologist indicate the victim died from accidental “blunt force injuries.”
The woman’s death is also being investigated by the Kitsap County Coroner’s Office.
