PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A 48-year-old Oregon man died Sunday morning after a motorcycle crash on Interstate 5 near south Lakewood, reports KIRO 7 Seattle.

The Washington State Patrol responded to the scene off the northbound interstate at Exit 124 to Gravelly Lake Drive Southwest, west of McChord Air Force Base. The wreck was first reported by KIRO 7 at 3:48 p.m.

According to authorities, the man was operating a motorcycle northbound on the interstate when, for reasons still unknown, the bike veered off the roadway. The motorcycle then collided with a barrier on the left shoulder, where it proceeded for 150 feet before coming to a stop.

First responders rushed the rider to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

A section of the northbound interstate was shut down for more than two hours following the accident.

The WSP noted the victim was wearing a helmet approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation at the time of the fatal crash.

An investigation remains in progress.
