PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A 51-year-old man died early Friday after his motorcycle was struck by a wrong-way driver on State Route 16 in central Tacoma, reports The News Tribune.

The fatal accident occurred on the eastbound interstate near Exit 1A to South Sprague Avenue. Washington State Patrol troopers responded to the scene shortly after 12:22 a.m.

According to the WSP, a Jeep was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes and collided head-on with the motorcyclist, and then with a Mercedes sedan driven by a 30-year-old Tacoma resident. All three involved vehicles came to a rest in the eastbound interstate, but the wrong-way driver fled the scene on foot.

The rider, a Mason County resident, was pronounced deceased at the scene, confirmed officials. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Troopers indicated the driver of the Mercedes was transported to a hospital, but no details have been shared regarding the extent of the injuries.

The roadway was shut down for almost five hours during the response and initial investigation.

Criminal charges are expected to be filed, but the WSP said no arrests have been made as of 11:00 a.m. Friday morning.
