KITSAP COUNTY, WA — Three people, including a DUI suspect, were hospitalized early Sunday after a multi-vehicle wreck on State Route 16 near Port Orchard, reports Kitsap Sun.
The accident happened near the exit to Southwest Sedgwick Road (State Route 160), just before 3:30 a.m.
According to the Washington State Patrol, a 22-year-old Fife man was behind the wheel of a 2003 Honda Accord heading westbound at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the car. Moments later, the Honda veered across the highway and came to a stop in the roadway.
Officials said the Honda was struck by a 2015 Toyota Forerunner and a 2020 GMC van.
The driver of the Honda fled the scene on foot but was located and taken into custody. Medics transported him to Tacoma’s St. Joseph Medical Center with undisclosed injuries. At this time, he faces charges of both “driving under the influence” and “hit and run.”
The driver of the Toyota Forerunner, a 58-year-old Port Orchard woman, as well as a Tacoma woman in the GMC, were both taken to St. Anthony Medical Center. No updates on their conditions have been released.
Officials said the driver of the GMC was not hurt.
A westbound lane remained closed for about three hours in the aftermath of the wreck.
An investigation remains ongoing.
