TACOMA, WA — One person died late Thursday afternoon after a two-vehicle collision at an intersection in Tacoma’s McKinley neighborhood, according to the Tacoma Police Department.

The fatal wreck occurred at East 34th Street Bridge and East D Street, just east of the Interstate 5 northbound onramp. It was first reported by the TPD at 4:17 p.m.

An early investigation indicates one vehicle was traveling eastbound on East 34th Street at the same time a second vehicle was heading southbound on East D Street. The driver of the second vehicle ran a stop sign at the intersection and collided with the victim vehicle.

After the crash, the causing driver got out of their vehicle and fled the scene on foot. Officials have since learned the suspect’s abandoned vehicle was reported stolen out of Puyallup.

One person in the victim vehicle was pronounced deceased, confirmed officials.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area, as the intersection was blocked off during the response and investigation. By 7:43 p.m., more than three hours later, the roadway was reopened.

The department’s Collision Investigation Team was handling the case. As of Thursday evening, the suspect remained at large.
