COWLITZ COUNTY, WA — A 58-year-old woman was hurt Friday afternoon in a crash that occurred while one driver was trying to avoid debris on Interstate 5 near Castle Rock, reports The Chronicle.

The Washington State Patrol said the accident occurred on the southbound lanes north of the city, at about 1:45 p.m.

According to officials, a 65-year-old Olalla man was driving a gray 2014 BMW in the left lane when he suddenly swerved to avoid hitting debris. As he quickly maneuvered back into his original lane, he was rear-ended by a gray 2013 Toyota Tacoma. The impact of the crash sent the BMW into a left-side concrete barrier before the vehicle spun into the right shoulder.

The victim, who was a passenger in the BMW, was taken to PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center in Longview with undisclosed injuries.

No one else in the BMW or the Toyota Tacoma, including the 64-year-old driver or her 52-year-old passenger, were reported injured. All occupants were found to have been wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck.

An investigation was underway, but drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been factors.
