PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A 34-year-old man died early Wednesday after a single-vehicle wreck that injured two children and the driver in northwest Gig Harbor, reports The News Tribune.

The fatal collision occurred in the 12900 block of Purdy Drive shortly after 5:00 a.m.

According to the Washington State Patrol, a woman was driving her male partner and two children northwest on the road when she fell asleep behind the wheel of the SUV. The vehicle traveled across the opposing lane before running off the road and crashing into a ditch.

The adult male passenger died from his injuries at the scene, confirmed officials.

The female driver suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

Officials said the couple’s two children sustained minor trauma and were taken a hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.

The WSP noted that while the driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, she has since been issued three traffic infractions related to the crash, including two fines for neither child wearing a seat belt. The third fine was issued for negligent driving in the second degree.

Both lanes of Purdy Drive were shut down for more than three hours during the response and investigation.

No further information has been disclosed at this time.
