MASON COUNTY, WA — A young child was fatally injured last Thursday after a car crashed into an area of Lake Cushman near northwest Hoodsport, reports FOX13 Seattle.
Deputies with the Mason County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) responded to the scene off State Route 119, near milepost 13, on June 23 at about 7:10 p.m.
Details remain limited at this time, but a car went over an embankment and traveled into the lake.
Officials said two adult occupants were able to exit the vehicle after it had become fully submerged, but a young child was unable to escape.
One of the car’s occupants, along with witnesses, jumped into the water and pulled the child out. The rescuers applied life-saving measures to the child before medics arrived.
Officials said the child was transported by airlift to Mary Bridge Hospital, but was later pronounced deceased.
The cause of the crash remains undisclosed at this time, but the driver was taken into custody and booked into Mason County Jail.
