WHATCOM COUNTY, WA — A DUI suspect was taken into custody early Sunday after hitting a patrol car and fleeing a traffic stop on Interstate 5 in Bellingham, reports KIRO 7 Seattle.

The incident occurred on the southbound lanes, near Meridian Street, at about 1:30 a.m.

According to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, deputies attempted to pull the driver over for driving the wrong way. The vehicle was also said to have been missing a license plate, and was later found to have had a stolen motorcycle, unsecured, in the back of the truck.

The suspect initially slowed in the right lane as if to stop. Moments later, he accelerated and appeared to intentionally crash into the front-passenger side of the patrol car, sending it down the I-5 onramp.

As the suspect fled northbound, deputies performed two PIT maneuvers and fired an OC pepper powder projectile into his car before he stopped.

He has since been booked into the Whatcom County Jail and faces multiple charges.
