PIERCE COUNTY, WA — Two contract workers were hospitalized early Sunday after their pickup truck was struck by a speeding driver on Interstate 5 near downtown Tacoma, reports FOX13 Seattle.

The incident took place on the southbound lanes just past the Puyallup River Bridge at approximately 3:10 a.m.

According to Washington State Patrol, drivers in a Gray Dodge Charger and a white Chrysler 300 were speeding southbound into the city when they entered a construction zone on the bridge. At one point, one of the cars rear-ended the other, sending it out of a lane and into a construction pickup truck.

Two workers in the pickup suffered serious injuries and were rushed to a local hospital. As of this writing, one of the workers has been discharged and sent home.

It was unclear which vehicle struck the pickup, but an investigation and search for the suspect in the white Chrysler 300 remain underway.
