PIERCE COUNTY, WA — One person died Friday morning after a major multi-vehicle collision that injured six others on Interstate 5 in Tacoma, reports King 5.
The fatal crash happened on the northbound lanes approaching South 38th Street, near Tacoma Mall. It was first reported by the Washington State Patrol at about 7:45 a.m.
Details are limited at this time, but according to WSP, two semi-trucks and five passenger cars were involved.
By 8:15 a.m., one person had died from their injuries at the scene.
Tacoma Fire Department confirmed four other people were transported to a local hospital. One patient was in critical condition, two were seriously injured, and one other person was taken to be evaluated as a precaution. Two other victims received treatment at the scene and were released.
All northbound lanes in the area were expected to remain shut down for several hours as emergency crews worked the scene.
An investigation remains ongoing, but authorities said one of the truck drivers was arrested after being suspected of intoxication at the scene.
