PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A man died early Tuesday after being struck by a semi-truck while working as a tow truck operator on Interstate 5 near Milton, according to KIRO 7 News.
The fatal incident occurred on the northbound interstate just south of Porter Way shortly after 6:15 a.m.
Washington State Patrol said the man was loading a disabled box truck onto the back of a flatbed truck on the right shoulder when a FedEx semi-truck veered out from its lane and hit him. A witness told authorities the impact of the crash sent the victim into the air.
WSP said the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The witness, whose truck was being loaded onto the tow truck at the time, stayed with the victim until first responders arrived.
The causing driver, a 65-year-old man, fled the scene but was later pulled over about a half mile away. He has since been arrested for suspected DUI.
