PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A 28-year-old man died Tuesday night after being struck by an Amtrak train while crossing railway tracks in downtown Puyallup, reports The News Tribune.
Puyallup Police Department said officers responded to the scene in the 100 block of North Meridian Avenue at around 10:10 p.m.
Details are limited, but the man appeared to have waited for a freight train to pass by the North Meridian railroad crossing before getting under the pedestrian railroad arm. He then attempted to cross when the Amtrak train approached, traveling at a markedly higher speed than the freight train. Witnesses said the man tried to avoid the train but was ultimately hit.
Authorities confirmed the victim, a Tacoma resident, died from his injuries at the scene.
An evaluation of the traffic control devices at the crossing and at the nearby intersection showed all were fully functional at the time of the event.
An investigation by the department’s Major Collision Response Team remains ongoing.
