PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A 40-year-old Tacoma man died New Year’s Day after being struck by an Amtrak passenger train in Lakewood, according to The News Tribune.

The fatal incident took place along the new Point Defiance Bypass route, between the Gravelly Lake and Thorne Lane exits off Interstate 5, at about 6:50 p.m.

West Pierce Fire and Rescue said the victim had been walking or sitting on the tracks when he was hit by a northbound Coast Starlight passenger train, known for running between Seattle and Los Angeles once a day.

First responders cut a hole in a nearby fence to access the man, but the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene shortly after. The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has since reported he died from “multiple blunt force injuries,” in what was determined to be an accident.

No other injuries were reported in the event.

An investigation by Amtrak police was underway.
