PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A man died Wednesday morning after crashing his pickup truck into the back of a stopped semi-truck on Interstate 5 in Tacoma, according to KIRO 7 News.

The fatal crash happened in the southbound lanes of I-5 near the main gate to Joint Base Lewis-McChord at around 6:40 a.m.

Washington State Patrol said the man was heading south in the left lane when he traveled across all lanes to the right and hit the trailer of the semi, which was stopped on the right shoulder. Shortly after, the pickup struck another vehicle.

The driver of the pickup was pronounced deceased at the scene, confirmed authorities.

Two right lanes were shut down during the response but later reopened around 10:50 a.m.

No further information has been released at this time.
