The collision occurred on the southbound lanes of the interstate near North State Street and Iowa Street. It was first reported by WSP at 2:07 p.m.
Authorities say a small red passenger car was turning onto the highway from North State Street when it lost control and overturned. An oncoming Washington Trails Association van, a Chevrolet Equinox, and a semi-truck were unable to stop in time, causing a chain-reaction crash.
Photos taken at the scene show the Equinox on its driver’s side and the WTA van partially rolled along the cement barrier.
WSP troopers, Bellingham police, and medics all responded to the four-vehicle accident.
A tweet from Trooper Rocky Oliphant suggests wet weather conditions and high speed may have contributed to the initial crash.
