SEATTLE, WA — A man in his 30s was killed early Sunday morning after his vehicle struck a barrier in the state Route 99 tunnel near the Uptown neighborhood in Seattle, according to KOMO News.

Crews with Seattle Fire were called to the accident on the stretch of SR-99 northbound near Mercer Street at about 3:00 a.m.

A rescue extrication was required at the scene for one person trapped in the vehicle.

Seattle Fire later confirmed the driver died at the scene.

An investigation was still in progress, but police said high speed played a role in the crash.
