JEFFERSON COUNTY, WA — A 10-year-old girl died Monday afternoon when she was struck by an SUV that also seriously injured a 12-year-old girl along US Highway 101 northbound in Queets, according to KOMO News.

The two girls were standing on a grassed area on the shoulder of US-101 northbound at around 1:00 p.m. when a northbound SUV drifted off the right shoulder of the highway, ran through an irrigation ditch and hit them.

State troopers and emergency medics said the 10-year-old girl died at the scene of the crash. The 12-year-old girl suffered serious injuries and was taken by airlift to Mary Bridge Hospital in Tacoma.

The driver of the causing SUV was found to have been undergoing a medical emergency and had lost consciousness at the time of the accident. She was taken to a nearby hospital for an evaluation.

The incident caused a six-hour traffic delay as authorities investigated.
