TACOMA, WA – Officials with the Washington State Patrol say an 81-year-old Tacoma woman passed away in a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 5 in Tacoma on Friday.

According to The Olympian, the crash occurred in the southbound lanes of I-5 at 84th St South around 5 p.m.

Troopers say the elderly woman’s vehicle was stopped in traffic, when a semi-truck struck its rear end. Her vehicle was then forced into the back of a third vehicle being driven by a Tacoma teenager.

The 81-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say the semi-truck driver, a man from Yelm, had been trailing too close.

All southbound lanes of I-5 were shut down for at least 5 hours on Friday night.
