AUBURN, WA – Authorities say a driver was arrested after driving the wrong way and crashing head-on into another vehicle on State Route 18 in Auburn on Thursday night.

According to KOMO News, dispatchers were alerted of an SUV traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of SR-18 shortly before 7:30 p.m.

Trooper Rick Johnson with the Washington State Patrol said the car crashed into a minivan head-on near the Auburn-Black Diamond Road intersection. The minivan then collided with a barrier and rolled over before catching fire.

Authorities responded to the scene, where they discovered the minivan driver had passed away at the scene.  The 39-year-old male driver of the SUV sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center for treatment.

Johnson said he will be apprehended for investigation of vehicular homicide.

No further details regarding the nature of the crash or identity of the victim were released.
