Common causes of fatal truck accidents

On Behalf of | Mar 15, 2019 | Fatal Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Residents in Seattle likely experience busy roadways on a daily basis. While many of these vehicles are likely individuals commuting to and from work, major roadways are also filled with large trucks seeking to make deliveries and shipments. Although it is commonplace to share the roads with semi-trucks and tractor-trailer trucks, these large trucks pose many risks on the roads. In fact, these massive vehicles are the cause of several fatal accidents each year.

With regards to fatal truck crashes, the occupants of passenger vehicles involved in the crash experience the most deaths. This is due to the vulnerability of these occupants. A passenger vehicle, although designed to protect its occupants, cannot always stand up to the size and force of a large truck. This can result in serious accident sites involving severe and fatal injuries.

With regards to cause, the breaking capabilities of a truck can be a major factor. These vehicles cannot stop as quickly as other smaller automobiles, taking 20 to 40 percent more distance to stop when compared to passenger vehicles. They also do not maneuver the same way either. These issues are especially more apparent during wet and slippery conditions due to the weather.

Another major source of fatal truck accidents is federal trucking regulation violations related to hours of service. This means that a driver has been driving longer than allowed. A truck driver may fail to take timely breaks or work more hours than allowed in a work week. This could result in driver fatigue and distractions.

A fatal accident can leave one asking many questions. Loved ones ask why and how the incident could happen. While investigation can help uncover the cause and liability, the losses experienced can be both emotional and overwhelming. Although nothing can replace what has been lost, a wrongful death action could help one seek compensation. This could offset financial hardships caused by medical bills, funeral costs, lost wages and other losses.
