Several injured in Seattle multi-vehicle bus & semi collision

On Behalf of | Sep 6, 2013 | Bus Accidents |

Many people routinely travel for both business and pleasure by air and many people also utilize airport shuttle services to transport them from their homes, offices or hotels to the airport on time. Drivers who work for a shuttle bus agency have an on-going duty to obey existing traffic laws while driving and have a duty to transport passengers to their destinations as safely as possible. Even though a driver may exercise caution, accidents can still happen due to the negligence of another driver on the road.

Recently, according to authorities, nearly six people were injured when a semi truck collided with two cars and an airport shuttle bus travelling in the high occupancy vehicle lane. The accident happened during a heavy rain storm when, apparently, the semi driver lost control as he was merging onto I-5 in Seattle. The semi crashed into the airport shuttle charter bus and two cars. Thankfully, the semi truck was not attached to a trailer. In total, six people were injured and at least one was reported in critical condition. At least two people in the cars, and the semi-truck driver, were also taken to the hospital.

Both the semi truck and charter bus driver are subject to federal regulations. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is responsible for ensuring that both semi truck and charter bus agencies follow all safety regulations. Under current regulation, all semi-truck operators must meet the commercial driving qualifications, be registered and maintain and routinely inspect their vehicles. Despite all the measure to ensure passenger safety and regulate semi trucks, accidents may still occur because of distracted driving, some kind of mechanical failure due to negligent maintenance, overloaded cargo or passengers or reckless driving.

Harm done by an accident cannot be undone. Nevertheless, an injured party may be able to recover damages for medical expenses, lost wages and more. This can be achieved by holding the negligent party, such as semi-truck driver, a trucking company, the charter bus agency or private bus driver responsible. An experienced personal injury attorney can assist an injured victim through all the steps in the process.
