Report: Teen car accidents are likely to rise in the coming months

Teenagers can be a danger behind the wheel, and they consistently have higher fatal accident rates than older drivers. For instance, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that teen fatality rates are roughly three times as high.

According to some reports, this is about to become an even more severe problem due to the summer months. There is usually an increase in the prevalence of teen accidents during the summer. Some have even referred to the three months when teenagers are on break from school as the 100 deadliest days of the year.

Why does this happen?

There are specific reasons this happens that you can trace through each accident. Some teens drive under the influence. Others cause accidents while speeding. Still others get distracted by their cellphones or by talking to passengers in the car with them.

But all of these things are also true during the rest of the year. As such, the main reason for higher teen accident rates in the summer is simply that they are on break from school. This is the most inexperienced age group with the highest fatal accident rate, but having to go to class tends to keep them off the roads for most of the year. That changes during the three months of summer, when they drive a lot more, greatly increasing the accident risk for those around them.
