Distracted driving is one of the most frequent catalysts for auto accidents in Washington. This is true despite attempts by law enforcement and safety advocates to educate drivers as to its danger.
Even with enhanced penalties and tacit efforts to prevent distracted driving, many still get behind the wheel and use their handheld devices. To further discourage the practice, King County is set to move forward with a program to warn drivers through technology.
While it is possible that this will be effective, people still need to be aware of the chance of encountering a distracted driver, be injured in a crash and face long-term ramifications.
The SmartSigns program has been implemented in four locations in King County. It will last through July. Although there are no legal consequences for people who are caught using their devices when passing these signs, the objective is to emphasize the importance of paying attention to the road. It will also give researchers at the King County Target Zero Coalition more information regarding distracted driving so they can formulate strategies to make the roads safer.
Considering the number of road fatalities in Washington, it is understandable that these tactics are being implemented. The Washington State Department of Transportation statistics are troubling regarding accidents in general and, specifically, distracted driving accidents. There were nearly 800 overall fatalities on state roads in 2023. Close to 16,700 accidents cited distraction as a factor. People lost their lives in 121 of these collisions.
The hope is that the more people are educated and informed about the risk of distracted driving, the less it will occur. Unfortunately, there is a constant looming concern that drivers will allow the temptation to overcome their knowledge of the possibility of a car accident.
People who were hurt or lost a loved one in an auto crash, a bicycle accident or a pedestrian accident will have a litany of challenges to address. Medical costs, pain and suffering, lost income, permanent damage, emotional issues and property damage are all factors to think about. Knowing how to investigate the accident and move forward in making a full recovery in every aspect will require qualified advice.
