Number of fatal motorcycle accidents seems to be rising

Most motorcyclists in Washington probably have their motorcycles stored for the winter months, but they are surely looking forward to warmer weather so that they can get back on the road again.

Our readers may be surprised to learn that, in America, motorcycles represent only 3% of all registered vehicles. Unfortunately, the statistics about fatal motorcycle accidents in America are still concerning.

NSC statistics

According to statistics from the National Safety Council, even though motorcycles might make up only 3% of registered vehicles in America, 14% of traffic-related fatalities in America in one recent year – 2021 – were motorcyclists. That is quite a discrepancy in numbers.

NSC statistics show that in the period of time from 2007 to 2021 the number of deaths of motorcyclists in America, and the death rate, fluctuated somewhat, usually increasing or decreasing seemingly at random over that time period.

However, in the last three years of statistics – 2019 to 2021 – the data shows a gradual increase. 2019 saw almost 5,050 motorcyclist deaths; 2020 saw over 5,500 deaths; and 2021 saw over 5,900 deaths.

Of course, there are a number of potential causes for motorcyclist deaths in America. Many will point to helmet use – or lack thereof. Others might point to rider experience and attention.

However, it is undoubtedly true that many motorcycle accidents are caused by other vehicles and the failure of drivers to notice motorcycles on the roadways.
