The State of Washington takes a nuanced approach to window tint laws with visible light transmission serving as the determining factor for legality. When you choose to tint your car or truck’s windows, the tint you choose must comply with the state’s guidelines.

There are several key factors to consider before you tint your vehicle’s windows.

Tailored regulations for different vehicles

Washington’s window tint laws vary depending on the type of vehicle in question. Sedans may tint the front and back windows, but that tint’s darkness rating must be at or below 24% visible light transmission. If you tint the rear window as well, dual side mirrors become mandatory on the vehicle. When you have an SUV, truck or van, the rear window tint restriction no longer applies. You can tint the rear window to any level you wish, though you must have dual side mirrors should you choose to do so.

Guidelines for reflectivity

You might want to install reflective film on your car windows. After all, it can help mitigate heat and glare inside the car. The state allows you to apply film with no more than 35% reflectivity.

Medical exemptions for darker tint

If you have a medical condition that requires tint darker than the state regulations allow, keep a doctor’s note in your car detailing the necessity of the exemption. You must provide that letter to law enforcement upon request, such as during a traffic stop.
