Some of us see motorcycling as a cheap and environmentally friendly way to get from point A to point B compared with a standard automobile. Some of us ride motorcycles simply because they are exciting and fun. Whatever the reason is why you ride, you will likely want to know what you and other motorists can do to prevent a motorcycle accident.

Motorcyclists can take steps to keep themselves safe. First, they can increase their visibility by wearing bright clothing, keeping their headlight on, and staying out of motorists’ blind stops. Motorcyclists can wear protective clothing from head to foot.

Motorcyclists can make sure they are monitoring road conditions so they can react appropriately. Finally, motorcyclists can make sure their bikes are in good working condition. That being said, even the safest motorcyclist can still be struck by a negligent driver.

Motorists have a legal duty to drive reasonably under the circumstances and this means avoiding motorcycle accidents. First, motorists must practice motorcycle awareness, meaning that they should check their blind spots whenever necessary.

Motorists should know that motorcycles are likely closer to them than it seems, due to a motorcycle’s small size. Motorists should not tailgate motorcyclists. Finally, motorists should understand that motorcyclists may need to change lanes to avoid debris, other vehicles and wind.

Negligent motorists can cause motorcycle accidents

Unfortunately, some motorists will not heed these safety tips and will cause a motorcycle accident. If the motorist is negligent, they may be liable for the damages the motorcyclist suffered in the crash.

Motorcyclists should make sure they understand their rights if they are struck by a car, including the possibility of pursuing a personal injury lawsuit against the negligent motorist.
