The state of Washington is considered one of the safest when it comes to cyclists and pedestrians. The reason for this is the added safety features provided by bike lanes, crosswalks, additional signage and the reduction of speed in areas where pedestrian and bicycle traffic is high. Despite these safety features in Seattle and other cities in the state, pedestrian accidents still occur. When a motorist is negligent or reckless, no amount of safety features will prevent a collision occurring.
Based on recent reports, a 23-year-old University of Washington student was struck by a vehicle while walking on the Montlake Bridge on New Year’s Day. The collision occurred around 1 a.m. when the student was headed home after leaving a party. Authorities reported that after the 18-year-old motorist struck the pedestrian, he continued driving, abandoned his vehicle and ran away.
Emergency crews arrived to the scene where the pedestrian was reported dead shortly after. Police were able to locate the abandoned vehicle nearby, and shortly after, were able to locate and arrest the motorist. The motorist was charged with a felony hit-and-run and driving without a valid driver’s license.
The aftermath of a fatal pedestrian accident can be overwhelming and challenging to navigate. Surviving family members are often filled with a wide range of emotions while they also question why this happened. Although nothing can be done to undo what occurred, a wrongful death action could help address some of the harms suffered as a result of the fatal accident. This civil suit not only helps place liability on the driver at fault but also aids in the recovery of compensation for the damages suffered.
