Driver arrested for DUI after hitting children playing outside

Auto accidents with pedestrians are among the most dangerous types of collisions. In Seattle and throughout Washington State, people should be alert and aware of their surroundings to try and remain safe. This is especially true of children, who are inherently vulnerable. Unfortunately, children can be simply walking to school or outside playing and be hit by a car. A 5-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl were hit by a pickup truck as they played near their home at approximately 6 p.m. The kids were in a battery powered Barbie vehicle. The pickup truck that hit them was driven by a 26-year-old man. After the collision, the driver fled, but was eventually caught by law enforcement and placed under arrest. He was believed to have been under the influence of alcohol and was charged with DUI. Both children were hospitalized. The boy was reportedly in stable condition. The girl was in the intensive care unit and in serious condition.

Serious injuries and death result from pedestrian accidents

Pedestrians are not accorded any form of protection when they are hit by a motor vehicle. This means they are likely to have serious injuries and potential fatalities. Brain trauma, spinal cord damage, broken bones, lost limbs, internal injuries and more can result and cause extensive challenges. Hospitalizations, surgeries, the need for long-term care and the inability to attend school and work can result. This will cost a significant amount of money and leave a person unable to live a normal life. For children, these possibilities are exacerbated.
