3 types of hit-and-run accidents

Being in an accident is bad enough. When the person that caused the accident does not stop, it makes it even worse. You are left wondering how you will cover the costs of damage and injuries.

Failing to stop after an accident where there is injury or death is a felony. Still, sometimes drivers who cause collisions do not think about that and flee the scene instead. These are three types of hit-and-run accidents:

1. Someone hits your vehicle when you are not there: You come out of the store to find your car has a scratch down the side, or the mirror hanging off. Or you find your motorcycle knocked over in the parking bay. The driver who caused the damage is required to leave their contact details on the vehicle if they cannot find you to give them personally.
2. Someone hits your vehicle when you are in it: You are driving along, and a car turns left across you, causing a crash. However minor the damage, you and the other driver must exchange details of your insurance, vehicle registration and driver’s license. You must call 911 if someone is injured or if the damage amounts to more than $1,000. If this is not the case, and the police do not come, you must report it to the police using their online form.
3. Someone hits you when you are walking or cycling: If you are walking or cycling along and a vehicle hits you, the driver must stop and ring 911 if you are injured. They must provide you with their details. You should try and get the contact details of anyone who witnessed your accident.
