Current rate of fatal car accidents in Washington

Driving a vehicle can seem very routine. This is especially true for those who rely on their vehicles to get to and from work, school, stores and other locations. Driving can feel very automatic; however, each time a person gets behind the wheel of a vehicle, it is a new experience. While one may be completely attentive and follow traffic rules, this does not change what other drivers choose to do. A driver’s safety is compromised when a driver is distracted, negligent and intoxicated, and no matter how safe one drives, this does not protect them from a fatal accident caused by a negligent driver.

Based on current data, the number of motor vehicle fatalities has increased since 2013 in the state of Washington. In 2013, there were a total of 436 fatal crashes, which increased to 565 in 2017. Of those 565 fatal accidents, 319 took place in urban areas, 178 involved alcohol, 172 were due to speeding and 183 involved restrained occupants.

With regard to the motorists involved in fatal crashes, there were 817 in 2017. Of these motorists, 67 were between the ages of 15 and 21 and 732 were over the age of 21. That year, there was a total of 80 motorcycle fatalities in Washington; 78 were wearing helmets.

Thus, it is important to consider the factors and details involved in the accident. The aftermath of a fatal car accident can be overwhelming for surviving loved ones.
