It’s unfortunate that accidents happen; however, with the growing number of motorists on the roadway, it is logical that accidents occurring between and among them would increase as well. With regards to motorcyclists, residents in Washington state and elsewhere often think of these vehicles only hitting the road during the summer months, the reality is that they can be seen year-round. While there are times of the year to be more aware of bikers, the fact of the matter is that motorists should always be aware of potential motorcyclists on the roadways.
How often do motorcycle accidents occur? When looking at other forms of motor vehicle accidents, fatal motorcycle accidents occur less frequently than fatal passenger vehicle accidents. However, just because less fatal motorcycle accidents occur when compared to other vehicles, this does not mean it is a safe mode of transportation.
In 2016, there was a recorded 37,461 deaths from motor vehicle accidents. Of these, 4,976 motorcyclist deaths occurred while 23,793 passenger vehicle deaths happened. In other words, motorcyclists make up 13 percent of motor vehicle deaths; however, motorcycles only make up 3 percent of registered vehicles on the roadways.
Thus, when considering the number of motorcycles on the road and the number of fatalities occurring, the rate of motorcycle fatalities is rather high. And it is obvious why the rate is so high. Hen a negligent or reckless driver collies with a motorcyclist, the biker is likely thrown from his or her bike. The rider then comes into contact with the ground on any other object. The force of this impact could be the cause of serious and even fatal injuries. This is true even when a helmet and protective clothing is worn.
Following a fatal motorcycle crash, it is important that loved ones understand their rights and options. The loss of a loved one is a difficult event to experience. While nothing can bring back a loved one, a wrongful death action could help address the losses and damages caused by a negligent motorist.
