A female biciclist was tragically killed in downtown Seattle this morning as a truck made a left turn from southbound Second Avenue onto University Street and hit her. It appears, as in so many bicycle accidents we see, that the truck driver simply failed to see the bicycle.
We represent many bicyclists and the most common argument we see from the insurance companies is that the driver didn’t see the bicycle or that the bicyclist “came out of nowhere.” The fact is that bicycles have as much right to use the roads as trucks and other motor vehicles, and the drivers have a duty to see the bicycles that are legally sharing the road.
If you are a bicyclist, please be careful out there. There are many drivers who aren’t looking out for you and are distracted by their cell phones and other distractions.
And if you have been injured by a motor vehicle while riding your bicycle, we can help. Check out our website or give us a call. We’d love to hear from you.
