As winter temperatures finally give way to spring, more motorcycles are likely to be seen on Washington roadways. As people enjoy beautiful weather, the freedom of a motorcycle and cheaper transportation, they also put themselves at risk of a motorcycle accident.
While television and movies like to portray motorcyclists as recklessly performing street tricks, and breaking traffic laws, often motorcyclists are just trying to get from place to place. Accidents are often caused by negligent drivers that fail to yield to motorcyclists or just don’t see them in the first place. Distracted and drunk driving are also frequent causes of crashes between motorcycles and cars.
In a recent accident in Burien a motorcyclist was killed. According to the King County Sheriff’s office, the accident occurred between a motorcyclist and the driver of another car on Southwest 156th Street around 9:00 p.m. Officers say that the other driver had been drinking and driving when the accident occurred. The 40-year-old motorcyclist was killed on the scene of the accident. Furthermore, another motorcyclist was injured trying to avoid the initial collision.
The driver of the car has been arrested and charged with vehicular homicide. Officers are still investigating to determine exactly how the accident occurred.
Motorcycle accidents caused by drunk drivers are completely senseless. When a motorcyclist dies in such an accident, that person’s family can be left with devastating consequences. They may have medical expenses, funeral costs, lost wages and pain and suffering. A wrongful death suit may be helpful in compensating families for these loses. While a lawsuit cannot heal the emotional pain caused by the loss of a loved one, it can ensure that the victim’s family does not suffer devastating financial losses as well.
